 The Italian eID card (Carta d'identità Elettronica Italiana) started to roll out throughout Italy in 2016. Rome, Milan, Naples, and Turin were the first cities to launch the project in July 2016.

The main challenge is to get an appointment at the registry office.

The Italian identity card is an optional identity document that may be issued to anyone who is resident in Italy and to Italian citizens living abroad.

A card issued to an Italian citizen is accepted in lieu of a passport to exercise the right of free movement in the European Economic Area and Switzerland or to travel to those countries with which Italy has signed specific agreements.

The identity is printed and later delivered by mail to the address of residence (or other address) declared by the applicant, or by the Istitute.
